MacDonnell, Dennis Gilmore

MacDonnell, Dennis Gilmore, J.P., Legal Manager, Exchange Buildings, Queen Street, Auckland. The subject of this notice is a native of Ireland, having been born at Limerick, in 1829. He was educated in Dublin, where for a time he studied for the law, and subsequently entered into the land and estate agency business. Owing to failing health, however, he was obliged to seek a warmer climate, and decided on visiting the Australian colonies, where he became interested in mining pursuits. Not quite liking the climate, and his attention having been drawn to New Zealand, he sailed for the Colony, reaching Duned'n in 1865. After spending a few years in Otago, he visited the West Coast of the South Island, and from there came to Auckland, where, on account of the excellent health he then enjoyed and the bright outlook which the goldfields presented to him, he resolved to make his home and settle down permanently. Mr. MacDonnell is well known as being possessed of large mining experience, and as one of the biggest mining investors in the Auckland Province. As a legal manager, his business is perhaps the most extensive in Auckland. page 465 Mr. MacDonnell was made a justice of the peace in 1884, and resides at “Avoca,” Vermont Street, Ponsonby, his residence being conspienous for the excellent view it affords, and for its tastefully laid out grounds.
