Gilfillan, Henry

Gilfillan, Henry, Junior, Legal Manager, Exchange Building. Queen Street, Auckland. The subject of this notice is the fourth son of the late Mr. J. A. Gilfillan, who came out from Aberdeen. Scotland, in the early days, and carried on for many years a large business as a merchant. Mr. Gilfillan was born in Auckland in 1855, and was educated at the High School and Wesley College. At the age of twelve he entered the office of his uncle (Mr. H. Gilfillan, insurance agent and coal merchant), and six years later joined his father, who was secretary to the Bay of Islands Coal Company. On his father's death in 1874, he was appointed acting secretary, and was subsequently promoted to the position of secretary and manager, which he held till the company's liquidation in 1894. In 1888 he also engaged in gold mining, combining the business of legal manager with his other business. Mr. Gilfillan, who is a Fellow of the Institute of Accountants of New Zealand, is the manager of a number of gold mining companies, and a representative of several English companies. He is secretary and one of the founders of the Hikurangi Coal Company.
