Hikutaia

Hikutaia.

Hikutaia Gold Syndicate, Limited; Head Office, Lawrence, Poultney Hill, off Cannon Street, London; Mr. J. E. Perceval, secretary. This company's mine at Hikutaia consists of 390 acres, and is an amalgamation of seven old claims. A low level has been driven to a distance of 1700 feet on the reef, and an adit crosscut of 560 feet provides an entrance to this level. The capital of the company is £50,000, of which half has been called up.

Mr. Francis Roche, Attorney and General Manager of the Hikutaia Gold Syndicate, was born in Cork, Ireland, in 1865. He qualified as an engineer in the Old Land, and after four years in China and Japan in charge of mining machinery, he was for a time at Coolgardie, in West Australia. In 1896 he arrived in New Zealand, and was for a time on the staff of the New Zealand, Crown Mine at Karangahake. Afterwards he was chief engineer for Messrs John Chambers and Son, in Auckland, and was appointed to his present position in 1899. He is a member of the Institute of Mining Engineers, London.
