King, Jesse

King, Jesse, and Co. (Jesse King), Mining Agents, Jesse King's Buildings, 71 Queen Street, Auckland. Telephone, 832. Cable address, “Kingly,” Auckland. Born in London in 1847, Mr. King went to Australia at an early age, receiving an appointment in the Bank of Australasia at Melbourne in 1869. He was in the employment of the bank for many years, held positions in various branches in Victoria, Tasmania, New Zealand, and New South Wales, and rose from junior clerk to manager. He was sent to Bendigo in 1871 during the mining boom in that town. His business brought him in touch with mining, and, as an observer, he made a study of the underground working of the mines. In 1882 Mr. King was transferred to the Auckland branch, and was also for a time in charge of the Greymouth branch on the West Coast of the South Island. In 1884 he left the service of the bank to carry on the business of importer and mercantile agent, and on the revival of mining, established himself as a mining agent, his previously gained knowledge being of the utmost value to him. Mr. King is thoroughly conversant with the mining districts, and holds considerable interests in Auckland and on the West Coast of the South Island. He is a director of several important gold mining companies, and is well known in mercantile and banking circles throughout the colonies.
