Fleming, Malcolm

Fleming, Malcolm, Mining Engineer, Auckland. Mr. Fleming, who was born at the Thames in 1870, is the second son of Mr. Andrew Fleming, an old colonist who was identified with the Thames as early as 1868. Mr. Fleming received his education at the Thames High School, and served three years under Mr. Montgomery and Mr. Park, of the Thames School of Mines, passing examinations in assaying, mining surveying, and chemistry. On leaving the School of Mines, he started prospecting throughout the Thames district, and worked for two years in various mines, in order to gain practical experience in mining pursuits. In 1890 Mr. Fleming took up an old mining properly called the “Adeline,” adjoining the Crown Mine at Karangahake. This mine, which was supposed to have been worked out, he renamed the “Earl of Glasgow,” and, under considerable difficulties, managed to erect a five head stamp battery on the property. The first crushing yielded ten and a quarter ounces to the ton. Work was continued on this reef for eight months, with substantial results. The claim was then sold to the New Zealand Exploration Company, and Mr. Fleming took up the Waiorogomai Field of 300 acres. Discovering some very large reefs, he received a tempting offer from the New Zealand Exploration Company for this property, which he accepted. He in now engaged in opening up properties and reporting for the various companies requiring his services. Mr. Fleming resides at Cowes Bay, Waiheke. He was married in 1897 to Miss Maunsell, daughter of the Rev. G. Maunsell, of Opotiki, and granddaughter of the late Ven. Archdeacon Maunsell, of Auckland.
