Captain Robert Huia Gibbons

Captain Robert Huia Gibbons, the popular Master of the Northern Steamship Company's steamer “Rotomahana,” was born at Manukau in 1864. He was educated at the Thames, to which his parents had removed, and where his father, Mr. John Gibbons, started the first saw mill. At the age of fourteen he went to sea, and remained five years in the coastal trade. He afterwards joined the mission boat, “Southern Cross, which was engaged in the Island trade, and remained in her for three years; and for about two years afterwards he was employed in the intercolonial trade. Subsequently, for twelve months, he was in command of a steamer engaged in the Thames river trade, but left her to join the service of the Northern Steamship Company as second mate on the s.s. “Wellington.” He was afterwards transferred as chief officer to the s.s. “Ohinemuri,” on which he ultimately became master. Captain Gibbons took command of his present vessel at the beginning of 1897. He was married in 1893, and has one son.
