Mr. Adam Henderson
Mr. Adam Henderson was born in Sunderland, England, in 1831, and learned his trade with a firm of large shipbuilders, with whom he served a seven years' apprenticeship. After two years' experience in other noted shipbuilding yards, Mr. Henderson went to sea as a ship carpenter, and two years later, in 1858, came to Auckland by the barque “Harwood.” After landing he worked for about twelve months on the first Auckland reclamation in Customs Street. He then, in conjunction with his late partner, Mr. Spraggon, started boat building at Smale's Point, where the Auckland graving dock now stands. The business soon won a leading position in Auckland. Mr. Henderson has been connected with church and school matters for a considerable number of years, and has been a member of the Pitt Street West and Devonport Sunday schools and church. He has also been a consistent temperance man since the age of fourteen. Mr. Henderson is married, and has a family of three sons and three daughters. The second son is associated with his father's business, and promises to equal, if not surpass him, in boatbuilding.
