Mr. Charles Vince Houghton

Mr. Charles Vince Houghton, the Manager at Auckland, has had a large experience in shipping and general commercial matters. He was born in 1856 at Kettering, Northamptonshire, and is a son of the late Mr. John Houghton, formerly of Northamptonshire, England. Mr. Houghton was educated at the Auckland College and Grammar School, and in 1872 he joined the staff of the New Zealand Freight Company under Mr. John Batger. Two years later Mr. Houghton entered the service of the New Zealand Shipping Company as junior clerk, and by steady advancement he attained in 1882 to the position of agent at Timaru. A year later, on being offered the management of the Waikato Coal and Shipping Company, Mr. Houghton resigned his position at Timaru and accepted the Waikato appointment, which he held to the satisfaction of all concerned until the 1st of March, 1886, when he rejoined the New Zealand Shipping Company as manager of the Auckland branch; and he still holds the position in conjunction with the management of the Waitara branch of the company's business. Mr. Houghton was elected to a seat on the Auckland Harbour Board as a representative of the shipping interest in 1891. Asfarashis busy life has allowed he has taken interest in all social matters. Mr. Houghton was married in 1886 to Miss Battley, eldest daughter of Mr. Frederick Battley, the late general manager of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, and his family consists of an only son.
