Captain Edward A. Stenbeck

Captain Edward A. Stenbeck, Master of the barque “Empreza,” was born in Sweden in 1866, went to sea at the age of fifteen, and was for three years in the employment of Shaw, Savill and Company. After spending a further period of three years under employers and masters of various nationalities, he came to New Zealand in 1889. Captain Stenbeck was on the “Terranora” for two years as mate; was mate and master of the “Stella” for a time; traded to Raratonga for two years in the “Linda Weber,” and was master of the ill-fated “Pirate,” wrecked during the heavy gale of Easter, 1896, in connection with which he was acquitted with honour, not the slightest blame being attached to him. Shortly after that he was placed in charge of the s.s. “Hercules,” which he commanded until 1899, when he secured his present position. Captain Stenbeck obtained his second mate's certificate in London, and passed for chief mate and master in Wellington.
