Mr. John Mcleod

Mr. John Mcleod, Second Engineer of the Northern Company's “Coromandel,” was born in Auckland in 1859, and is a son of the late well-known Captain McLeod, who took a very active part in the Maori troubles at the Bay of Islands, served with the volunteers in Hone Heke's war, was present at the storming of Ohaeawai, and the taking of Ruapekapeka, and was the possessor of several medals for military service in New Zealand. Mr. McLeod served his apprenticeship in the well-known engineering shops of Messrs Fraser and Tinne, and on completion of his apprenticeship, went to Sydney to improve his knowledge and experience. He joined the service of the Union Steam-Shipping Company as fourth engineer on the “Rotomahana,” and after serving in several of the boats of that company and attaining the position of second engineer, he left its emploment with a good record for twelve years' service. In the year 1887 Mr. McLeod joined the Northern Company as second engineer, and now holds a position as such on the “Coromandel.”
