Mr. William Blackwood

Mr. William Blackwood, Second Engineer of the “Clansman.” was born in 1857 at Greenock, Scotland, where he was educated. He served his apprenticeship in his native town, with the well-known firm of Rankin and Blackwood, engineers. In 1880, he went to sea as engineer in the steamer “Duke of Argyle,” then trading to Dublin, and afterwards served in the Mediterranean trade. He came to New Zealand in 1884 as second engineer in the Union Company's steamer “Tekapo,” and remained in that service for eleven years as chief engineer. In 1896, Mr. Blackwood purchased a share in the s.s. “Akaroa,” of which he was chief engineer, and he afterwards entered the service of the Northern Steamship Company. He was married in New Zealand in 1894.
