Mr. Arthur Mainland

Mr. Arthur Mainland, Chief Engineer of the Northern Steamship Company's “Gairloch,” was born in London in 1849, and was apprenticed at the locomotive works of the North London Railway, under the locomotive superintendent, Mr. William Adams. In 1870 he went to sea, and joined the “Biela,” belonging to Messrs Lamport and Holt, of Liverpool, as fourth engineer; but left her to join the Great Eastern Railway Company's line of paddle steamers, running between Harwich and Antwerp. He remained in that services as second ongineer for eighteen months, and then entered the service of David Verbiste and Co., shipowners, of Antwerp, and was engaged in the Mediterranean and Black Sea trade for twelve months. Mr. Mainland then became second engineer on the s.s. “Francisco Calderon,” chartered for Brisbane, with the intention of afterwards carrying coolies between China and Callo. In 1875 he arrived in Auckland by the steamer “Llewellyn,” on which Mr. Harry Self, inspector of machinery in New South Wales, then chief engineer. Mr. Mainland then joined the Auckland Steam Packet Company's “Go-a-head,” trading between Manukan and West Coast ports, but left that service to join the steamer “Taranaki,” belonging to the Union Steamship Company, and remained in her as second engineer until she was wrecked in 1879. In 1881 he joined the Northern Steamship Company as chief engineer of the page 449 “Rowena,” and after serving in a similar capacity on the steamers “Argyle” and “Glenelg,” joined the “Rotomahana,” whence he was transferred to the “Gairloch.” Mr. Mainland is married and has a family of seven.
