Mr. Thomas Taylor

Mr. Thomas Taylor, Chief Officer of the Northern Steamship Company's s.s. “Rotomahana,” was born in 1841, in Essex, England. He joined a West Indian trader at he age of twelve, and remained for four years engaged in the coastal trade, but then joined the “Monsoon,” trading to Alagoa Bay. Afterwards he came to Melbourne in the “Norfolk,” one of Money Wigram's boats, and arrived in New Zealand in 1861. Not being satisfied with the prospects of New Zealand, he went to California, where he joined a coastal survey vessel, and afterwards entered the pilot service of San Francisco. In 1868 he went to England, but returned to Auckland in 1869, and was engaged in several vessels until he entered the service of the Northern Steamship Company in 1890. He was afterwards connected with various ships of the company, until he received his present appointment. He had been engaged in colonial waters but a short time, when he had the misfortune to be wrecked. It will be remembered that the Earl of Pembroke's yacht, “Albatross,” was lost at Fiji in 1870. Mr. Taylor was one of the officers of the “Albatross,” and in company with the rest of the party he had a very narrow escape. In 1873 Mr. Taylor married a lady of German extraction at Auckland, and has a family of one daughter.
