the barque “Bertha,” commanded and owned by his uncle Captain Becher. On the completion of his indentures Mr. Scott joined the service of Mr. Patrick Henderson and the Albion Company, shipowners, then trading to the East Indies and New Zealand. When he entered the Company's service he was before the mast, but at the end of ten years he left as chief officer of their ship “City of Auckland,” which was unfortunately wrecked at Otaki, Cook Strait. In 1867 Mr. Scott came to Auckland and entered the office of his brother-in-law, Captain W. E. Anderson, who was a receiving and forwarding agent, and remained with him for about eighteen months. But he found office life unsuitable, and joined the Northern Steamship Company as chief officer of the steamer “Glenelg.” He left that vessel to take command of the “Rowena,” belonging to the same company, and remained in her four years, trading on the West Coast. After having commanded several of the company's steamers, he left its service in 1887, and joined the “Janet Nicoll” as chief officer, and afterwards the “Richmond,” then engaged in the Island page 448 trade and belonging to Messrs Donald and Edeaborough, of Auckland. On the purchase of these steamers by the Union Steamship Company, Mr. Scot rejoined the Northern Company in 1896, when he received the appointment of second mate on its new steamer “Wakatere,” In which he is now chief officer. He is a member of the Shipmasters' Association of New Zealand, is married and has a family of eight children, and three of his eldest boys are at sea.
