Mr. Thomas Braidwood

Mr. Thomas Braidwood, Chief Officer of the Northern Steamship Company's s.s. “Gairloch,” was born in Stranraer, Scotland, in the year 1862, and shipped as an apprentice on the Albion Company's s.s. “Marlborough.” After serving in that steamer for four years he joined the Union Steamship Company's s. “Waihora” as fourth officer. He was in the “Waihora” for four years, during which he was promoted to second officer. After that he was successively in the “Southern Cross” and the s.s. “Oreti,” which were engaged in the Island trade. Two years later he joined the s.s. “Takapuna,” and then went to Scotland to act as chief officer of the Union Company's s.s.” Upolu” on her first trip out to New Zealand. Some time afterwards, Mr. Braidwood commanded in succession the s.s. “Kanieri” and s.s. “Moa,” trading between Auckland and Napier. He left the service of the Union Company in 1894, and look charge of the s.s. “Ngunguru.” Subsequently Mr. Braidwood purchased a large interest in the s.s. “Akaroa,” and brought her from Lyttelton to Auckland to engage in the Thames-Coromandel trade, in which he made himself and his boat very popular with the public. Mr. Braidwood afterwards catered the service of the Northern Steamship Company.
