Mr. Harry Wrigg

Mr. Harry Wrigg (New Zealand Cross) was born at Carcur House, near Wexford, Ireland, and at an early age served in H.M. Dragoon Guards. While yet young he was articled to a leading civil engineer in the north of England, under whom he was engaged upon railways and waterworks. On his arrival in this Colony he saw service in the war of 1863, for which he was awarded the war medal and clasp; he was also decorated with the “Cross” for valour, for voluntarily carrying despatches ninety miles through the enemy's country. Mr. Wrigg was draughtsman by special appointment to H.R.H. the Duke of Edinburgh, and was chief draughtsman in the engineer-in-chief's department, Thames Goldfields, and in the New Zealand Public Works Department, from 1868 to 1888; for part of the period he had charge of the photo-lithographic and lithographic branches, as well as the drafting for the Marine and Railways Departments. He holds first awards for drawings, with silver medal, at the Sydney Exhibition (1879), Melbourne (1880), and Centennial Exhibition (1887). Mr. Wrigg retired on a pension through ill-health in 1887.
