Mr. Charles Cookman McMillan

Mr. Charles Cookman McMillan, J.P., of Ardstrath,” Remuera, is one of Auckland's most prominent citizens. He is a son of the late Rev. Gibson McMillan, of Belfast, nephew of Sir William McArthur, K.C.M.G., and brother of Sir William McMillan, K.C.M.G., of Sydney, and was born at Dublin in 1848. He was educated at the Wesleyan Education School, Dublin, and afterwards entered the firm of Messrs W. and J. McArthur, London. Mr. McMillan afterwards joined the firm as a partner, and came to New Zealand in 1869, to take the position of managing partner in the New Zealand firm of McArthur and Co., from which he retired in 1874. During his long residence in Auckland Mr. McMillan has taken a leading position in all local and general affairs, and has helped very much to promote the city's welfare. He is at present a director of the firm of Messrs A. Clark and Sons, warehousemen, of Auckland; a director of the South British Insurance Company, and a trustee of the Auckland Savings Bank, and has at various times held the responsible positions of chairman of the Chamber of Commerce and Auckland Harbour Board. Mr. McMillan is a prominent member of the Masonic body, being District Grand Master of the English Constitution. He has taken three trips to the Old Country, and during his last he visited the Paris Exhibition, and made an extended European tour. Mr. McMillan married the daughter of the late Mr. Archibald Clark, and they have a family of one son and three daughters.
