Mr. Henry Ellis

Mr. Henry Ellis, Old Colonist, was born in Bundoran, County Donegal, Ireland, where his family have for many years owned a sanatorium, which is famous for its lovely surroundings, and the excellence and completeness of its medical appliances. He migrated during the fifties to Auckland, where he entered mercantile life, and took a keen interest in public matters. Mr. Ellis was elected to seat in the Auckland Provincial Council, and later on he was appointed assistant health officer, in conjunction with the late Dr. Phil-son. He also acted as immigration officer under the administration of Sir Julius Vogel, and held the appointment until the abolition of that department. Mr. Ellis also took a

page 430 prominent part in the formation of the Vesey Stewart Special Settlement at Katikati. He subsequently removed to Canterbury, where he died in 1881, universally regretted.
