Mr. R. S. Carter

Mr. R. S. Carter, Secretary and Treasurer to the Mount Wellington Road Board, was born in Devonshire, England, in 1828, in the parish of East Budleigh, in Hayes' House, the birthplace of Sir Walter Raleigh. At the age of fifteen, Mr. Carter left England for Calcutta, where for twenty years he was engaged in the pilot service on the Hooghlev. On account of failing sight, he was obliged to retire on a pension, and returned to England, where, after recovering his sight, he joined the London and South Western Railway Company, and afterwards followed the occupation of a farmer for eight years in the north of Devonshire. In 1875 Mr. Carter came to New Zealand. He landed in Auckland, and after a few months went to Whangarei, and purchased a farm at Ruatangata, where he remained for seven years. In 1884 he removed to Ellerslie, and has been there ever since. He was elected a member of the Mount Wellington Road Board in 1888, and after one year of membership was appointed, secretary and treasurer. Mr. Carter married, in 1853, in Calcutta, and has four daughters and two sons.
