Water Supply

Water Supply.

Though very far from being an absolute failure, the water supply of Auckland is yet in such condition as to cause page 50 a good deal of anxiety to the civic authorities during very dry seasons. It is obtained from the Western Springs, distant about six miles, and is pumped into reservoirs at high levels, the highest being on the brow of Mount Eden, at an altitude of about 500 feet above the sea. A good pressure is obtainable at almost all parts of the city and suburbs; but the price charged for water for power purposes, precludes its common use even for light machinery.

Every year the question of a new source of supply comes up for discussion, and various localities have received a good deal of attention from engineers, mayors, councillors, and private citizens. The present supply, however, is so nearly satisfactory, and the drainage question is of so much more pressing importance, that it is not likely that Auckland will undertake a new water supply at any time during the next few years.
