The Cyclopedia of New Zealand [Auckland Provincial District]

Anderson, H. F., and Co.

Anderson, H. F., and Co., Ship Chandlers, etc., 36 Queen Street, Auckland. This firm was originally founded by Messrs Lillewall and Rattray, about 1845, and was acquired by Captain Hugh Falconer Anderson in 1870. The business premises consist of three stories built of brick, and are well furnished with stock suitable for the requirements of the shipping trade. Captain Anderson has been identified with the welfare and progress of Auckland since 1854, and was at one time one of the largest shipowners in the city. He took a conspicuously active part in connection with the early work of the Auckland Harbour Board, and in initiating and establishing the Northern Steamship Company, the services of which have been of such signal benefit to the people of Auckland and the settlers in the northern districts. He was born at Aberdeen, Scotland, on the 10th of April, 1829, and is the eldest son of the late Captain James Anderson, one of the oldest steamship masters trading out of the north of Scotland. He served his apprenticeship with the well-known firm of Messrs Duthie and Co., shipchandlers and owners. After being engaged in the Australian coastal service, and on the Victorian goldfields, Captain Anderson came to Auckland in 1854 by the brigantine “Gazelle,” commanded by Captain Murdoch McKenzie.
