Mr. W. Steuart

Mr. W. Steuart, son of Mr. F. J. Steuart, of Hawera, of the well-known firm of Steuart and Corrigan, auctioneers, was born in Hawera. He was educated at Wanganui College, and afterwards studied at the Central Technical College, London, where he obtained the diploma for physics and electrical engineering. He went to Germany, and there made a thorough study of the electrical treatment of ores. On his return to England he entered the works of Messrs J. H. Holmes and Co., electrical engineers, manufacturers, and contractors, of Newcastle-on-Tyne, and in that firm gained a most thorough knowledge of his profession. On his return to New Zealand Mr. Steuart accepted the management of the Stratford Electrical Supply Company, and superintended the whole of its works. On leaving Stratford he came to Auckland, where he and his partner started their present business. In the beginning of 1901, Messrs Steuart and Fenn, in competition with other New Zealand firms, and with two of the largest firms in England and America, obtained the Government contract for lighting the Seacliff Lunatic Asylum, which will have about 1500 lamps. Mr. Steuart is an associate of the Institution of Electrical Engineers, and of the City Guilds of the London Institute.
