Seagar Bros

Seagar Bros. (William, Charles, George, and Henry Seagar), Engineers, Boilermakers, Iron and Brass Founders, General Smith Workers; Manufacturers of Cyanide Percolating Vats, Wrought Iron Water Pipes, and Fluming, Steel Steam Launches of guaranteed speed; Designers and Makers of Steel Yachts, Ventilators, Tanks, Girders and Plate Iron workers, Hobson Street Wharf, Auckland. Telephone 583; Bankers, National Bank of New Zealand. P.O. Box 513. This extensive business was established in 1866 by the late Mr. William Seagar, a gentleman well-known in the colony as having been at the head of his profession. He was succeeded by his four sons, the present proprietors, who, by their ability and energy, have made their foundry one of the foremost in the colony. The premises, which consist of a large block of iron buildings, are situated at Hobson Street Wharf, adjoining the Auckland Graving Dock. The site is most convenient for shipping purposes, and vessels of large tonnage can be loaded at all states of the tide. The foundry is fitted up with furnaces, and the newest and most complete machinery. Large hydraulic plants, both stationary and portable, have been fitted up at great expense for the manufacture of boilers and dredges. There are also punching machines, angle iron-cutting machines, and sets of plate-bending rollers, for pipe and boiler work. The whole plant is one of the most complete in the colony. Large numbers of men are constantly employed by the firm. Since cyanide has been introduced in the extraction of geld on the Upper Thames goldfields, all the large cyanide plants employed there, and miles of fluming and water pipes have been manufactured by Seagar Bros., whose work has invariably given the utmost satisfaction. Numerous mining batteries and gold crushing plants bear the firm's well-known name throughout the whole Hauraki Peninsula, and show the extent of its operations, and the superiority of its workmanship. Messrs Seagar Bros. are large manufacturers of gold dredges, and orders are being constantly received by the firm from the West Coast and other centres of the dredging industry in the South Island; in December, 1900, three were under construction for various companies. Marine repairing is a large and important branch of the firm's business, and such is the despatch used that little delay is caused to shipowners after they give their orders. page 374 and throughout the premises, and thus, when necessary, work is effectively carried on by night as well as day. Latterly the building of steel yachts has been added to the firm's extensive business, and such yachts manufactured by it have attained a high reputation for superiority of workmanship and speed. The “[unclear: H]uia” and “Thetis,” well-known race-winners, testify to the firm's success in that line. Every branch of iron and brass work is carried on by Messrs Seagar Bros., whose highclass work is recognised throughout New Zealand, and whose well-merited success is due to their own energy and undoubted professional skill.
