The Cyclopedia of New Zealand [Auckland Provincial District]

Mr. Samuel Mccoskrie

Mr. Samuel Mccoskrie, the Founder of the business, was born in the north of Ireland, where he learned his trade. He arrived in Dunedin in 1863, but removed to Auckland in search of a milder climate, and accepted an engagement to take charge of a large foundry in the city. A year or two later he went to the Waikato district, where he worked for the Government for some time, principally at his trade on the steamers. After about a year and a half he returned to Auckland, and took up his former position, where he remained until 1877, when he started his present business. Although taking no active part in political life, Mr. McCoskrie has always been keenly interested in municipal and colonial affairs, and has given his aid in many a hardly-fought election. He is a thoroughly practical man, and is conversant with every detail of his trade.
