The Cyclopedia of New Zealand [Auckland Provincial District]

Handley, Charles

Handley, Charles, Stove and Range Manufacturer and Locksmith, Elliot Street, Auckland. This business was founded in 1897. Mr. Handley has already acquired a name for his excellent workmanship, and has a very extensive connection throughout the whole of the Auckland provincial district. His cooking ranges, manufactured of wrought iron, and with steel tops, are highly prized for their endurance by all who use them, and for the ease with which they can be kept in order. Mr. Handley also supplies ships and steamers with cooking ranges, and many vessels trading to Auckland are supplied from his workshops. Four hands are kept constantly employed, and Mr. Handley fully expects that he will need a large number later on owing to the increasing prosperity of his business. The motive power employed in the workshop is supplied by a three and a-half horse power Otto gas engine. Two forges are kept constantly in use, and all the requistie machinery is of the newest and latest design. Mr. Handley was born in Auckland, and served his apprenticeship with Mr. H. H. Smith, then a well-known range manufacturer, but now out of business. He remained in the employment of Mr. Smith for nine years and a half, and then, in order to obtain a more extensive knowledge of the various branches of the iron trade, he served for two years at Mr. Parker's galvanised iron works. He was afterwards for eight years in the service of Mr. Hyauiason, range-maker, and for eight months with Messrs Broady and Co., whom he left to start his present business. Mr Handley's reputation as a thoroughly practical mechanic is well known and acknowledged in Auckland.
