Auckland has two Collectors of Customs, one being stationed at Gisborne, and there are officers in charge of Customs at Tauranga, Mangonui, and Kaipara, with coast-waiters at Thames, Russell, Whangaroa, Whangarei and Hokianga.

The Stamp Department is administered by Deputy Commissioners at Auckland and Gisborne.

The Land and Survey Department is under the control of a Commissioner, assisted by a very large staff of surveyors, draughtsmen and other officers. The Commissioner is also chairman of the Land Board, the other members of which are selected from various parts of the district.

The Public Works Department for the Auckland Province is under the management of a district engineer, Mr. C. R. Vickerman, the only other district engineer in the Colony being resident at Dunedin.

There are two district managers of railways, the extra manager for the Auckland Province being stationed at Kaihu, and there are “Stationmasters in charge” located at Whangarei and Kawakawa. There is a district engineer of railways also at Auckland.

Of Chief Postmasters there are three in the district, as against one in the province of Wellington, that one being at Wanganui, for the Post Office at

page 27 Wellington is under the charge of a chief clerk. The chief postmasters for Auckland are stationed in the City, at Thames, and at Gisborne.

The Department of Agriculture is represented by an assistant entomologist and four inspectors of stock; the Government Life Insurance Department by a district manager; the Public Trust Office by a district agent; and the Defence Department by a Lieutenant-Colonel, commanding the district, and an Adjutant.
