Legislature.

The members of the Legislative Council resident in Auckland are:—The Hon. Henry Williams, appointed on the 7th of March, 1882; Hon. George Bentham Morris and Hon. William Swanson, appointed on the 15th of May, 1885; the Hon. William Thomas Jennings, appointed on the 15th of October, 1892, and re-appointed on the 16th of October, 1899; the Hon. Benjamin Harris and

page 26 Hon. William Kelly, appointed on the 3rd of February, 1897; and the Hon. A. J. Cadman, appointed on the 21st of December, 1899. The three first named gentlemen hold their appointments for life, but by an Act of 1891 those subsequently appointed hold office only for seven years from the dates of the writs of their appointment.

In the House of Representatives, out of a total of seventy-four members, Auckland has, exclusive of Mr Hone Heke, who represents the Northern Maori District, fifteen, representing thirteen electorates. They are:—W. J. Napier, G. Fowlds and J. H. Witheford (City of Auckland); Hon. J. McGowan, Minister of Mines (Thomes); Hon. James Carroll, Colonial Secretary (Waiapu); Sir George Maurice O'Rorke, Speaker (Manukau); Messrs R. M. Houston (Bay of Islands), Robert Thompson (Marsden), Richard Monk (Waitemata), John Bollard (Eden), Frank Lawry (Parnell), W. F. Massey (Franklin), W. F. Lang (Waikato), W. H. Herries (Bay of Plenty), and Jackson Palmer (Ohinemuri).
