Mr. Rees Goring Thomas

Mr. Rees Goring Thomas, Deputy Registrar of the Supreme Court at Auckland, Deputy Sheriff for the District of Auckland, Local Patent Agent and Clerk of Awards for the Northern Industrial District, under the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Act, was born at Greytown, Wairarapa, on the 23rd of October, 1860. He was educated partly at the Napier Grammar School and partly at the Auckland College and Grammar School, and entered the Civil Service in 1878 as postmaster, telegraphist and stationmaster at Pokeno. Two years later Mr. Thomas was transferred to the Auckland Police Court as clerk, and in 1882 became clerk in the Supreme Court at Auckland. In 1887 he was promoted to the position of Deputy-Registrar of the Supreme Court at Christchurch, from which he was transferred to Wellington in 1889. After five years' service he went to Auckland as clerk to the Police Court, and in 1896 was appointed to the position which he now holds. In February, 1898, Mr. Thomas became Registrar of the Supreme Court at Christchurch, Sheriff for the District of Canterbury and a Marshal of the Supreme Court in respect of its jurisdiction as a Colonial Court of Admiralty, during the absence of Mr. A. R. Bloxam, on leave. Mr. Thomas is a tennis player, and a member of the Parnell Lawn Tennis Club, of which he has been secretary and a member of the committee.
