The Cyclopedia of New Zealand [Auckland Provincial District]

Mr. Justice Conolly

Mr. Justice Conolly was appointed a Judge of the Supreme Court of New Zealand on the 19th of August, 1889, in succession to Mr. Justice Gillies, who had died suddenly at Auckland on the 26th of the preceding month. Judge Conolly held his first Supreme Court session at Auckland eight days after his appointment, and has ever since exercised jurisdiction in the district. He was born on the 31st of August, 1822, and his father, Dr. John Conolly, of Hanwell, Middlesex, England, was eminent as an authority on insanity. In 1849 Mr. Conolly entered as a student of the Inner Temple, and was called to the Bar in January, 1852. He practised for thirteen years in England as a member of the Home Circuit, came to New Zealand in 1865, and on being admitted as a barrister and solicitor of the Supreme Court, settled down to the practice of his profession at Picton, which he represented in the Provincial Council of Marlborough from 1867 till 1876, when the provinces were abolished. Mr. Conolly afterwards represented Picton in Parliament from 1882 till 1887, and was Minister of Justice in the Whitaker Government of 1882–3, and the Atkinson Ministry of 1883–4. Judge Conolly is further referred to at page 81 of the Wellington volume of this work.
