The Cyclopedia of New Zealand [Auckland Provincial District]

[introduction]

page break

Aucklanders, like most pleasure-loving people, are devotedly attached to music, and operas and concerts are better patronised amongst them than they are in any other part of New Zealand. Among those who, in the past, were intimately associated with the Choral Society, but who now are numbered with the dead, may be mentioned Mr. Joseph Browne, Judge Fenton, Colonel Balneavis, the Rev. S. Edger, and Mr. J. S. Cousins, all of whom, as conductors, leaders, or committeemen, took a deep interest in the Society's welfare. The higher branches of musical art are still well sustained in the city, but the people who like “music with tunes in it,” are also provided for at numerous entertainments. There is a Chair of Music in Auckland University College, and this and the teachers enumerated in this section will show how well instruction in the art is provided for in Auckland.
