Mr. John Potter Clark, P.D.G.S.W., Deputy District Grand Master of the District Grand Lodge of Mark Master Masons, Scribe E. of the Auckland Royal Arch Chapter, and District Grand Secretary of the English Constitution, was born in Monmouthshire, Wales, in 1821. He arrived in Australia in 1854, and seven years later came over to Otago on the outbreak of the gold rush. There he engaged in the carrying trade for about three years, when he removed to Auckland, and his horses and waggons were purchased by the Government. Mr. Clark was then appointed by the Provincial Government to manage the tramways at the Thames, and was afterwards employed by the General Government for ten years in the railway department. In 1877 he was initiated as a Mason in the Prince of Wales Lodge, 1338, E.C.; he afterwards passed through all the chairs of that Lodge, and occupied the office of worshipful master for three years in succession. Service Lodge 421 I.C., Auckland, in September, 1868, and passed the various offices in that lodge. He afterwards affiliated with Ara Lodge 348 I.C., filling the chair in 1874, and has been ever since closely identified with that lodge. Bro. Pierce, then Provincial Grand Master, Bro. Rees resumed office a few years later, as the Provincial Grand secretary had levanted from the Colony and the affairs of the Provincial Grand lodge were again complicated.
