Major Bennett

Major Bennett was born in Devonshire, England, and was trained to take charge of ordinary corps work in the London Training Home for cadets. He was appointed to his first corps at the meeting at which Captain Pollard and Lieutenant Wright received the flag from the hands of the late Mrs Booth, with orders to proceed to, and open the Army work in New Zealand. Major Bennett held appointments in five English towns—namely Paignton, Truro, St. Mary's Church, St. Just, and Camborne. From Camborne he was transferred by General Booth to Australia, and had charge successively in Newtown, Goulburn, Newcastle, Albury, Sydney, Tamworth, and Collingwood. Under his direction the condition of the Salvation Army's affairs in those cities greatly improved. At Collingwood he was promoted to the rank of staff captain and sent to take the oversight of operations in Tasmania, and ever since has held the position of a divisional officer. From Tasmania he was transferred to the Geelong division, thence to divisional commands in South Australia and New South Wales, whence he was appointed to the Dunedin division, where he was most successful, and was promoted to the rank of Major. After two years in Dunedin Major Bennett was transferred to his present appointment in charge of the Auckland division.
