The Rev. Samuel Aaron Goldstein

The Rev. Samuel Aaron Goldstein, the Rabbi of the Auckland Jewish Congregation, was born in London, in 1855. He was educated at the Jews' College, London, the principal Jewish institution in Great Britain for the training of rabbis. Mr. Goldstein was placed in charge of two Hebrew schools, one belonging to the Jewish congregation at Middlesboro', Yorkshire, and the other at West Hartlepool, England. He was ordained at the early age of twenty-two, and was appointed Rabbi to the Hebrew congregation at Toowoomba, Queensland, where he remained for three or four years. After filling a similar position at West Maitland, New South Wales, he accepted a unanimous call to Auckland, where he has now (1901) been actively engaged for over twenty-one years. During his residence in Auckland, the beautiful new synagogue has been erected. Mr. Goldstein is acting-chairman of the Society for the Protection of Women and Children, and was one of the founders of the old Societe Literaire Francaise, which has been superseded by L'Alliance Francaise.
