The Church Of Christ

The Church Of Christ was founded in Auckland by Mr. G. A. Brown, who, with a few others, met for worship in the Temperance Hall, Albert Street, on the 1st of November, 1880. This gathering increased to forty-seven members by the end of the year, and the roll now contains 300 members. The Sunday school was started with thirty scholars, and has increased to 280. In 1881 the Choral Hall was engaged for services, and five years later the Opera House was taken, and services were held there for two years. Subsequently the church established itself in the Foresters' Hall, Karangahape Road. The present building, which is situated in West Street, a few yards from Karangahape Road, was opened in August, 1898. The main portion of the building stands upon brick foundations, and the interior measurement is 72 feet by 49 feet. Under the gallery there is a separate room, used for small meetings, and under the wings of the gallery there are two class rooms. Seating accommodation is provided for 500 persons. The building is of a handsome design, and cost, with the site, about £1600.
