The Ponsonby Baptist Church

The Ponsonby Baptist Church is situated at the corner of Jervois Road and Seymour Street. The church was founded in 1880, and the Rev. Charles Carter, formerly a missionary in Ceylon, was the first oniciating minister. He was followed some years later by the Rev. J. Hughes Jones, during whose ministry the present church was erected in 1886. The foundation stone was laid by Dr. Kenderdine. Seating accommodation is provided for 400 worshippers, and the cost of the church, exclusive of the site, was about £1000. The Rev. J. Hughes Jones was followed by the Rev. J. G. Gilmour, and in 1893 the present minister succeeded to the charge.
