The Alexandra Street Primitive Methodist Church

The Alexandra Street Primitive Methodist Church was built in 1851, on a site given by Sir George Grey, at that time Governor of New Zealand. The building, which has recently been renovated, is of wood, and seats 400 worshippers. Facing the pulpit are two side wings, which make the building T-shaped. A pleasing effect is introduced by the stained-glass borders of the windows. Surrounding the fine pipe organ are the choir seats; Mr. A. Trenwith is the organist, and there is a strong choir. The Rev. Robert Ward, who arrived in New Zealand in 1844, was the first officiating minister of the church, and his son, the Rev. Charles E. Ward, who held the charge for five years, was the immediate predecessor of the present minister, the Rev. William Laycock. The Sunday school is held in a large separate building adjoining the church, and is well attended. The main room of the Sunday school is surrounded by ten class-rooms. There is a circulating library of over 600 choice works. The Primitive Methodists have two circuits in the city and suburbs. Alexandra Street circuit includes the churches at Upper Pitt Street, Eden Terrace, Newmarket, Surrey Hills, and Mount Roskill, of which the ministers are the Rev. William Laycock (superintendent) and Rev. H. Williams, assisted by supplies. The Franklin Road circuit includes the churches at Richmond Road, Waterview. Avondale, and Hobsonvile, which are served by the Rev. W. S. Potter and supplies. The value of church property in the city and suburbs is set down at £5078, and the value of house property at £1803.
