Father William Purton

Father William Purton, O.S.B., Church of the Sacred Heart, Auckland, was born in 1835, in Worcestershire, England. In 1859, he took the habit of St. Benedict at the novitate house, St. Michael's, Belmont, Herefordshire. After passing his novitiate examination, he entered the celebrated College of St Edmonds, at Douai, in France, and was ordained there by Dr. Collier, on the 6th of April, 1867. Father Purton ministered at several places in England during a number of years, and came to new Zealand in 1880. He had charge of South Dunedin for eight years, and on leaving that district he received an appointment in the Christchurch diocese, where he remained for five years. In the year 1893, Father Purton removed to Auckland, on the opening of Bishop Luck's house, to act as chaplain to the Bishop and the Sisters of Mercy. Under the regime of Bishop Lenihan, who succeeded Bishop Luck, he took a position at St. Patrick's Cathedral, whence he was transferred to the Church of the Sacred Heart.
