Very Rev. Daniel Osmond Egan

Very Rev. Daniel Osmond Egan, O.S.B., D.D., who is in charge of the Church of the Sacred Heart, was born in Dublin in 1852. Educated at St. Augustine's College. Ramsgate, England, he entered the Benedictine Order in 1868, and in the following year went to Rome, where for seven years he studied at the Gregorian University, obtaining the degrees of Doctor of Philosophy and Divinity. Dr. Egan devoted his leisure moments to the study of music, under the famous masters Filippo Bornia and Gaetano Capocci, and graduated as a Fellow of the Royal Academy of St. Cecilia. On his return from Italy, he was placed in charge of the students of the Benedictine Agricultural College, Dublin, and was subsequently appointed to the same position at St. Augustine's College. Ramsgate, his Alma-Mater. In 1883 Dr. Egan was called to Rome as Professor of Theology in the Benedictine College of St. Ambrose, and two years later accompanied Bishop Luck to Auckland. With him he lived as private secretary until December. 1892, when he was appointed to the pastoral charge of St. Benedict's, Newton, now known as Grey Lynn, where he remained until July, 1900, when he was translated to the Church of the Sacred Heart.
