St. Benedict's Church

St. Benedict's Church is A Massive And Imposing Brick Building, standing at the corner of East and Gladstone Streets. It was erected in 1889, at a cost of £5800, and accommodates 1200 worshippers. The adjoining hall is a wooden building, which is used both as a day school and a public hall. It was erected in 1898, at a cost of about £1800. There are about 140 scholars on the roll. The first mission was established at St. Benedict's in 1880, when it was created a parish. It was founded by the Rev. Father Downey, O.S.B., and afterwards conducted by the Benedictine Fathers. Services were held in the old church of St. Francis de Sales, until a wooden church was erected at St. Benedict's in 1881. This building was destroyed by fire in 1887, and almost immediately afterwards a start was made with the present church. In 1891 the Very Rev. Dr. Egan. O.S.B., was appointed priest at St. Benedict's. and he was succeeded in July, 1900, by the Rev. G. Gillan, who formerly held the charge at Ponsonby.
