The Right Rev. Monsignor Patrick O'reilly

The Right Rev. Monsignor Patrick O'reilly, the Administrator in charge of St. Patrick's Cathedral, Auckland, and Dean of the Eastern District, was born at Rosscarbery,
Monsignor O'Reilly.

Monsignor O'Reilly.

Cork, Ireland, in 1843. He arrived at Auckland in 1852, and was educated there at the Catholic schools. He also received private tuition and preparation for the priesthood in Auckland. Monsignor O'Reilly was ordained in February, 1866, and before leaving Auckland he, for five yeas, filled the post of curate of St. Patrick's. He was then placed in charge of the Coromandel parish, where he was the pioneer priest, and built St. Colman's Church during the first year of his pastorate. In July, 1878, Monsignor O'Reilly moved to the Thames, and had charge of Ohinemuri and Te Aroha districts. During his oversight of these districts, St. Mary's, Paeroa, and St. Joseph's. Te Aroha, were erected, but after the separation of these parishes from each other, and from the original parish, about 1885, Monsignor O'Reilly's attention was concentrated upon his original parish at the Thames. As Diocesan Consultor, Monsignor O'Reilly holds an important position, and when a bishop was to be elected for Auckland, he was one of those nominated for the office, and was second upon the list. For many years, Monsignor O'Reilly was chairman of the Thames Hospital Trustees, and was auditor and chaplain for the local branch of the Hibernian Australasian Catholic Benefit Society. Monsignor O'Reilly was appointed to his present position on Bishop Lenihan's page 227 departure for Europe, in 1899, when he was also made Dean of the Eastern District. In 1900 His Holiness the Pope conferred on him the dignity of Domestic Prelate, with the title of the Right Rev. Monsignor.
