St. Patrick's Cathedral
St. Patrick's Cathedral, Wyndham and Chapel Streets, Auckland. The original building was erected in 1847 by the Very Rev. Father Forest, S.M. It was constructed of scoria stone, and is now attached to the nave of the new Cathedral, and forms for the present its transepts. The new portion, which is built in the Gothic style of architecture, was completed by the late Bishop Luck, on St. Patrick's Day, 1885. Accommodation is provided for 1100 worshippers. Upon the return of Bishop Luck from Europe, in 1886, he presented a beautiful marble alar, which forms one of the most striking objects in the Cathedral. The Cathedral parish has a very extensive area, and contains the majority of the Catholics in the diocese.
