The Venerable Edward Bloom-Field Clarke

The Venerable Edward Bloom-Field Clarke (B.D. Lambeth), sometime Archdeacon of Waimate, and Supervisor of the Maori Church of the Auckland diocese, was born on the 4th of May, 1831. He was the son of an esteemed missionary, Mr. George Clarke, who was attached to the Church Missionary Society, and arrived at the Bay of Islands in 1822, and afterwards, when the Colony was established, became Chief Protector of Aborigines. The son was educated at the Church Missionary College, Islington, London, and was ordained as deacon by the late Bishop Perry, in Melbourne, in 1856, and as priest in 1859, when he was appointed curate to the Archdeacon of Portland at Belfast, Victoria. In 1860, Archdeacon Clarke returned to Auckland, and took charge of the native school at Tauranga. On the outbreak of the Waikato war, in 1863, he proceeded to Gisborne, but when the Hauhaus revolted on the East Coast, and murdered the Rev. Karl Volkner at Opotiki, on the 2nd of March, 1865, and also threatened to murder the Bishop of Waiapu and other missionaries, Mr. Clarke proceeded to Waimate, where he

was shortly afterwards appointed to the Archdeaconate by the present Primate, Bishop Cowie. In 1885, Archdeacon Clarke returned to Auckland, to take charge of the Maori population of the diocese, subject to the control of the Bishop. Archdeacon Clarke was married, in 1857, to Susanna Frances, daughter of Lieutenant John Wood, R.N. Mrs Clarke died in December, 1890, and Archdeacon Clarke on the 22nd of October, 1900.
