Professor Hugh William Segar, M.A. (Camb.), Professor of Mathematics at Auckland University College, was born at Liverpool, England, in 1868, and is the only son of the late Mr. Robert Segar. He was educated at the Liverpool Collegiate Institution, and at the age of sixteen, in the Cambridge Senior Local examinations, was first in English, in science, and in mathematics, both pure and applied. Professor Segar entered Trinity College, Cambridge, in 1887, and graduated B.A. in 1890, being second wrangler in the Mathematical Tripos of that year. He became Walker Prizeman in 1890. Yeats' Prizeman in 1891, and Smith's Prizeman in 1892. On leaving Cambridge in October, 1893, he was appointed lecturer on mathematics at the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth. This appointment he held only till the following March, when he received the position of professor of mathematics at the University College, Auckland. Professor Segar took his M.A. degree shortly after arriving in New Zealand, the time-qualification for this degree not having been previously completed. He is the author of several original contributions to the mathematical journals.
