Sacred Heart College And Primary School

Sacred Heart College And Primary School. This institution, which is a large and commodious building, occupies a very central position at the corner of Pitt and Wellington Streets. It is subdivided into two distinct departments, viz., the college proper and the primary school. The course of instruction, besides embracing all the subjects required for the Civil Service (Junior and Senior), Matriculation, University Scholarship, and the Trinity College Musical Examinations, includes drawing, painting, phonography (Pitman's), and bookkeeping. The well-equipped gymnasium which has lately been erected should prove a boon, alike to the ordinary college pupils, and to members of the Ex-Students' Association, for whose joint use it has been erected. Though the college is still in its infancy, having been founded in 1895, the advent of the Marist Brothers to Auckland is of a much earlier date, as they opened the primary school on the 7th of September, 1885, with eighty pupils. At present the roll number for this school is 250. The Government syllabus has been adopted, and an inspector, having the approval of the Government, appointed. Thus the certificates issued by him are, as far as Government institutions are concerned, considered equal to the ordinary inspector's certificates.
