Mr. J. W. Joynt

Mr. J. W. Joynt, Registrar of the University of New Zealand, was born on the 14th page 197 of December, 1852, in County Wicklow, Ireland, and educated at endowed schools in Kilkenny and near Dublin. He entered Trinity College, Dublin, as First Classical Sizar, in 1873, and during his four undergraduate years he was almost invariably head of the Classical Honours Lists every term, and high up in the Honours Lists for English Literature and Mental and Moral Science. In 1877 he took his B.A. with two gold medals, in classics and mental and moral science, and the Senior Studentship of £100 a year for seven years. He also obtained the gold and silver medals for oratory and composition in the University Historical and Philosophical Societies. Before and after taking his degree Mr. Joynt did a great deal of private coaching for high University examinations. In 1880 the University presented him with the degree of M.A. Unfortunately, his health broke down in the course of subsequent work for a Fellowship, and he then came out to New Zealand. After a year on a station in Hawke's Bay, Mr. Joynt began to read law; but in 1889 he was offered the Principalship of Nelson College. This offer was accepted by him, but he took a short run to the Old Country before entering on his duties. In 1895 Mr. Joynt had a year's leave of absence, and he travelled a good deal in Europe. He resigned the Principalship of Nelson College, in December, 1898. On the founding of Victoria College, Wellington, he was second in the running out of fifty-seven candidates for the Chair of Classics. Mr. Joynt was appointed to his present position in February, 1899; and he is also lecturer in German in Victoria College, Wellington.
