Rev. John King Davis

Rev. John King Davis, M.A. (New Zealand University), Assistant Master at the Auckland Grammar School, was born at Waimate North, Bay of Islands, in 1858, and is the son of the late Rev. Richard Davis, of the Church Missionary Society. He was educated at the Church of England Grammar School, Parnell, and at St. John's College, Tamaki. He gained a senior university scholarship in 1880, and took his B.A. degree in 1881. In 1882 he obtained the M.A. degree with first-class honours in Latin and Greek. He was ordained deacon in 1881 and priest in 1882 in old St. Paul's Church, Auckland, by the present primate of New Zealand, the Right Rev Bishop Cowie. Mr. Davis acted as assistant curate of All Saints'. Ponsonby, from 1881–1883, and held the same position in St. Sepulchre's parish from 1883–1886. He was curate-in-charge of the Mt. Albert district from 1886–1889. In 1890 he was appointed one of the assistant masters of the Auckland Grammar School.
