Mr. John Flashman Sloman

Mr. John Flashman Sloman, B.A. (with honours, Sydney University), Assistant Master at the Auckland Grammar School, was born near Plymouth, England, in 1843, being the second son of Mr. W. Sloman, of that place. He was educated at the Fort Street public school, Sydney, New South Wales, and, at the early page 202 age of fourteen years, entered the service of the Board of National Education. After remaining in that service for seven years, he next held an appointment at the Ipswich Grammar School, Queensland, for four and a half years, and then pursued a course of studies at the Sydney University for another term. In 1871 he took his B.A. degree with honours in classics and mathematics. Mr. Sloman left Sydney for Auckland in 1872 to fill a position as assistant master at the Auckland Grammar School, where he has also been mathematical and second and second master. In 1885 he was elected headmaster of the Auckland Girls' High School, and discharged the duties of this onerous and important position until the middle of 1888, when owing to the withdrawal of the Government grant the school was closed and Mr. Sloman was re-appointed to his present position. He takes a great interest in athletic sports, and in past days represented his university on the football field. He is at present captain of the Grammar School cadet corps, which is quite a feature of that educational institution.
