Mr. James Hight

Mr. James Hight, M.A., Master of Modern Languages at the Auckland Grammar School, was born at Christchurch, New Zealand, in 1870, and is the eldest son of Mr. S. Hight, of Canterbury. The subject of this notice was educated at the Malvern district school, at the Normal Training school, Christchurch, and at Canterbury College. In 1893 he took his B.A. degree (having previously held the English Exhibition for two years at Canterbury College), and the Senior Scholarship of the University in modern languages; and in 1894 qualified for his M.A. degree (with First Class Honours in modern languages). During the years 1887–90 Mr. Hight was engaged in teaching at Malvern district school; he also taught at the Normal Training school for two years, and afterwards spent some years in private coaching. In June, 1896, he was appointed to the English and commercial mastership at the Auckland Grammar School, and in December following received his present position. Mr. Hight compiled the biographical section of a manual of English literature of the 18th century, written by Professor J. Macmillan Brown, M.A.
