Mr. William George Meddings

Mr. William George Meddings, Inspector of Telegraphs, Auckland District, hails from Shropshire, England, where he was born in 1844. Arriving in Lyttelton with his parents by the ship “Duke of Portland” in 1851, he was educated at private schools in Christchurch, and joined the Telegraph Department in 1867 as an operator, having previously learned telegraphy. Mr. Meddings opened the station at Selwyn, which was almost his first work after joining the department. For some years he was employed in relieving and inspecting duty, and was appointed Inspector of Telegraphs for Canterbury in 1878. He was transferred from Christchurch to Nelson in April, 1899, and from Nelson to Auckland in September, 1900. Mr. Meddings isan unattached member of the Masonic Order. He was married in 1864 to a daughter of Mr. Robert Main, farmer, and has one son and five daughters.
