Mr. Samuel Birt Biss, Chief Postmaster of the Auckland Postal District, was born in Calcutta, India, in 1813, and is the son of Mr. I. B. Biss, merchant, of Calcutta. Mr. Biss entered the postal service as a cadet on the 1st of March, 1860, and has completed forty years of service with the department in New Zealand. In December, 1861, when the discovery of gold was causing a great accession of population in Otago, Mr. Biss was appointed chief clerk of the Dunedin Post Office, and remained at Dunedin through all the busy times consequent on the development of the goldfields in Otago. chief postmaster at Auckland, on the retirement, on pension, of the late Mr. Corbett, and has held his present appointment during the past thirty years.
